Lake Plains YMCAIn 1977, the community of Medina was shocked when the state announced the closing of the Medina Armory and the transfer of local guardsmen to other locations. Medina was not about to see its beautiful building, rich in history, be lost to decay and ruin. After a series of public meetings, the community rallied around a large group of leaders named the ARMORY ACTION COMMITTEE. Over a period of 20 years this dedicated group made successful attempts to adapt the Medina Armory to public recreational use and the effort was climaxed with the installation of a full-scale YMCA unit on the site. The new "Lake Plains YMCA" activity, with over 1,000 members, has instituted many programs for body-building, character-building and health consciousness. Today it boasts:
The Lake Plains YMCA is governed by its own board of directors and employs an executive director. During the 1980s, the community negotiated with the State of New York for ownership of the Armory, paying a small sum for the transfer. Today the Lake Plains YMCA is a nominal owner of the building.
